Car search
Through my time at Autoit, I have worked continuously on improving the user experience and usability on Biltorvet, a website that aggregates new and used cars from car dealers throughout all of Denmark.
The search is the primary function. The search has many levels, broad search for narrow search, to less advanced search to very advanced.
But the big issue lies in making a search, so that everyone in the target group are met. To the user who knows nothing about cars. To the user who knows a little about cars, but still wants advice and guidance in their search. And not least, to the user who seems to know most about cars and loves to ‘nerd down’ in details.
A short description of the process
It’s never a linear process!
- Insights: Desktop research, what and how works or not for others alike. Who are the users. What are their main concerns regarding finding the right car etc. What parameters does user choose when searching.
- Conceptualizing: Card sorting with stakeholders, user interaction mapping, User journeys, sketching and wireframing and mockups.
- Designing: Prototyping, low and high.
- Testing: Design tests, usability testing in house and with actual users.
- Designing: Adjusting design, adjusting userflow etc.
- Delivering: Assets to developers, design system.

To get an overview of the existing search, I made an interaction map – with the data we had. It provided the benefit of elucidating what search parameters users actually choose and what he or she would go through to select them.

It was necessary part of the process to get to know the users better. But also invite the team to think about the user in the development process. That is why I held an empathy mapping workshop. This resulted in some light personas that develop as we get to know the users better.
I have user tested, the car search both on mobile and desktop more than once, as changes would be made.
