StarConnect overview page combining IoT sensor data with manual fuel-consumption reporting
The StarConnect overview, bringing IoT sensor data and manual reporting into one operational picture for captains and chief engineers.

StarConnect is a fleet-wide platform that replaced Maersk’s legacy fuel-consumption reporting, combining IoT sensor data with automated and manual reporting to give captains and chief engineers a modern, data-driven view of vessel performance.

01 Problem

Maersk relied on a legacy system to report fuel consumption across a global fleet of more than 250 vessels. Fuel is one of the largest operating costs in shipping, so the data mattered enormously, but the platform was ageing and the data was neither reliable nor consistent enough to support good decisions.

The hardest constraint was the users themselves. Captains and chief engineers were distributed across the globe and often at sea, which had made research and validation so difficult that previous efforts had largely gone without it.

02 My role
  • Led UX research, defining user profiles and user journey mapping for captains and chief engineers.
  • Introduced remote user interviews, design workshops and usability testing where direct access had previously failed.
  • UI design across the solution and neighbouring products, implementing the Maersk design system.
  • Concept development and delivery of new features across the product suite.
  • Established and led UX practices for the team, mentoring, onboarding and raising user-testing standards.
03 Process

I started by solving the access problem. By introducing remote interviews, design workshops and usability testing, I got captains and chief engineers directly into the process for the first time, turning a fleet that had been out of reach into a reliable stream of insight.

That research fed user profiles and journey maps, which in turn shaped the flows and interaction model. I worked across two product teams, designing the UI on the Maersk design system and developing new features and concepts across the product suite, and improving how the UX designers and product teams collaborated along the way.

04 Outcome

Outcome

StarConnect successfully replaced the legacy platform, delivering more reliable and consistent operational data. Combining IoT-generated data with manual reporting created real transparency around fuel efficiency, enabling better decisions and potential cost savings on one of shipping's biggest expenses.
